롬1, 미디블에서 구현하지 못한 해전을 최초로 구현한점
또한 최초 시도임에도 불구하고 높은 완성도를 보여줌
롬토1, 미디블2에서 계승되어져 오던 수입 시스템이 역변되면서 신선한 재미를 추구
항구의 중요도가 수입 시스템의 변화와 맞물려 수직 상승함에 따라 새로운 전개 방식이 파생되어짐
(본국 주요 무역항만 막혀도 수입이 -가 되버리는 매직)
광활한 캠패인맵에 따른 다양한 민족, 국가, 유닛등 차별화를 원하는 유저들을 충족
라인배틀에 열광하는 서양분들의 욕구를 해소하는데 어느정도 일조하였다고 봄

(오스만 / 마라타 등등) 필자 최고 기록은 13분 50초 오스만 최대턴 넘김 시간을 경험
미디블보다 오히려 퇴보한듯한 우그러진 라인보병 면상에 절망감을 금치못함
DLC 유닛은 또 멀쩡하게 내줘서 둘이 세워놓으면 실소를 금치 못할 정도로 갭이 커져버림
롬, 미디블에서 많은 호응을 이끌어냈던 가계도 시스템을 버린것이 마이너스 요소로 작용

-토탈 워 사상 최대 크기의 지리적 배경 : 북아메리카 및 중앙아메리카 일부, 유럽, 서아시아, 남아시아를 아우를 뿐만 아니라 상아해안과 베르데 곶 등도 무역로로나마 표현되었다. 드넓은 지형은 정복에 대한 욕구를 자극하면서, '제국'의 매력을 돋보이게 하는 시각적 이점을 제공한다.
-18세기 구제국주의 시대라는 시대적 배경 : 이미 그 자체만으로도 충분히 매력적인 요소이다. 정렬된 진형과 이전 세대보다 진보된 화약 무기, 규칙적이고 깔끔해진 제복까지! 계몽시대만의 외적 특징을 매우 잘 보여준다.
-민병대 도입 : 전작들과 달리, 주둔 병력이 없는 도시의 빈집털이'를 방지하기 위해 민병대만 잔뜩 양성해낼 필요가 없어졌다. 질은 떨어지더라도, 이젠 전투 시작 시 무장한 군중들이 자동배치된다.
-끝내 고쳐지지 못한 일부 결함들 : 기병 돌격은 여전히 적 병사를 말그대로 '밀어내'며, 특히 보병이 요새에서 월벽을 시도할 때 프레임이 급격히 떨어지는 경향을 보인다. 또한, 도망가는 적을 추격하여 섬멸할 때에도 적병의 시체가 '밀려난'다.
-정치 장치의 삭제 : 이전 작품들에서 보여줬던 왕가나 원로원 등의 요소들이 모두 사라졌다. (군주의 탄생과 죽음을 알리는 창이 존재하기는 하나, 플레이어가 가족관계도 등을 볼 수는 없다.) 내각이라는 요소와 더불어 정치체제가 새로 도입되기는 했으나, 내각 편성이 정치체제의 영향을 받는 우스운 상황이 벌어졌다. 덕분에, 마음대로 내각 개편이 불가능한 민주정이 왕정보다 뒤떨어지는 기묘한 일이 벌어진다. - 중산층의 지지라는 민주정의 장점은 왕정의 우수한 내각으로써 상쇄가 가능하다. (플라톤이 이 게임을 좋아요 했습니다!)
