Far Cry 3 crashes on Windows 10 after 15 minutes of gameplay
I updated my 64-bit 8.1 to Windows 10, and far cry 3 was the one crashing in 10 mins, every time. All the drivers were up to date, and yet no good news. The game started, 10-15 minutes of gameplay, crash. I re-installed Windows 10 x64 from zero, and when it went to Far Cry 3, the problem stayed the same.
There is a solution!
Thanks to SamaelShih, it has been figured out that TabletInputService forces FarCry3.exe to crash, when enabled. To solve the crash problem:
1) Open Task Manager
2) Go to Services
3) Identify TabletInputService (Touch Keyboard and Handwriting Panel Service)
4) Stop the service
5) Launch FarCry3
Service could be re-enabled, when you're done.
Enjoy!
"Did I ever tell you the definition of the "Insanity"?" - pretty much, what's been happening in this thread for the last 3 months.
Failed attempts:
I figured out couple things:
1) Everyone encountering same problem have Windows 10 64-bit. I have Far Cry 3 working smoothly on another PC, having Windows 10 32-bit, also updated from 8.1.
2) Problem is related to DirectX audio file, xaudio2_7.dll, possibly because of its incompatibility with a new OS.
3) Disabling Realtek Audio (or any other sound driver) will remove crash, but you play silent. Not a solution.
4) It is definitely Microsoft bug, since I tried re-installing Far Cry for hundreds of times, run in every single compatibility combination, even tried running couple pirated releases - no result.
5) Re-installing DirectX, Visual C++ and .NET Framework don't give any positive result.

Dear community, help on this question will be really appreciated.
Update 1:
Through Event Viewer, I figured out that the following modules appear to be failing one by one:
xaudio2_7.dll d3d10.DLL
C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\MSVCR100.dll
igd12umd32.dll
d3d10.dll_unloaded
d3d10core.dll d3d12.dll
Last two fail most of the time.
Update 2:
sfc /scannow showed corrupted opencl.dll file. I re-installed Intel HD Graphics, but it gave no result.
Update 3:
On Ubisoft forum, they offered to install the game on the system disk (C:\), which was something, I have not tried yet.
Unfortunately, game crashes the same way. Recent two launches failed, referring to same module,XAudio2_7.dll_unloaded
Good thing is, once game is installed on C:\, only xaudio2_7.dll fails.
A further suggestion of removing/renaming the xaudio2_7.dll file at system folder (\syswow64, not \system32) solves the crash, but totally removes the sound from a game.
Recent too launches showed that game crashes due to the failure of d3d10.dll and d3d10core.dll . Whether the cause is the hardware is still unknown, but I've found an opinion, that the problem could be caused by IntelHD Graphics Card itself.
The suggestion of lowering the sound quality to the lowest (16bit, 44100Hz) did not prevent the crash, unfortunately.
No problem with FC3 at all here. Playing in DX11. No Compatibility settings used.
My Win10 64bit is an upgrade from Win7 74bit (vs clean install), and the games were all installed on Win7.
None of my games are installed to C:\ .
Using Nvidia GTX770, and Realtek HD audio with current Win10 Realtek, and other motherboard drivers,
from AsRock (my motherboard mfg).
Same performance as on Win7. The only difference, as with a lot of games on Win10, is when I close the game
I get a bogus error stating that the game had a problem and needs to close . Yeah ! Right !
The only problem is this senseless error message stopping the game from finishing closing.
No idea what XAudio2_7.dll_unloaded means, but there is no problem with the XAudio2_7.dll .
- If the XAudio2_7.dll has been corrupted you can no longer delete and reinstall using the DirectX Web installer
as MS has mysteriously stopped providing it, but you can re-install all DirectX files using the DirectX runtime installer which will overwrite all existing files and fix any corrupt files in the process.
While this installer may look outdated, there have been no new DX 9, 10 or 11 files since June 2010 -
Thanks, ArtyChas, for posting here and including all of the things you have tried. I would like to add that I also have this exact problem. I'm running Windows 10 64-bit & Realtek Audio, and Far Cry 3 crashes 15 minutes after starting -- every single time. When I consult Event Viewer, I get the same error messages as you: usually XAudio2_7.dll_unloaded, but also d3d10.DLL_unloaded, d3d10core.dll_unloaded, and msvcp110_win.dll_unloaded.
Frustrating, to say the least!
If anyone has found any possible solutions or has any other ideas, please post and let us know.
I understand the inconvenience that you are facing and I appreciate your efforts for trying the probable solution.
As the issue seems to occur due to the audio files, I suggest you to re-install the audio drivers, video derivers and all the applications that were provided by the manufacturer to provide extra features to this drivers.
If it doesn’t helps I suggest you to re-install the audio drivers, video derivers and all the applications that were provided by the manufacturer to provide extra features to this drivers in the compatibility mode and check if it helps. (Please do install all the drivers and the applications in the same compatibility mode i.e. if you are installing the Windows 8.1 drivers please install the supported application also of the same version.)
To install the drivers in compatibility mode follow the steps below:
Download the driver from the manufacturer’s website.
Right-click on the driver setup file and click on ‘properties’.
Click on the ‘compatibility’ tab and check the box ‘Run this program in compatibility mode for’ and select Windows operating system from the drop down menu and proceed with the installation. Once this is done, restart the computer and check if the issue persists.
Hope this helps. Please respond if you have any further related query.
I've been following your thread since my last post, as I was curious (mostly because of the suspicions of
the DirectX audio file being the culprit), why some people were having problems with this game on Win10.
- The fix is interesting, and it's a bit surprising that running from Clean Boot didn't reveal the Services conflict,
as this (and Startup items) is supposed to be the strength of using Clean Boot for troubleshooting.
-
I believe the problem, and the fix, may only apply to laptop though (assuming those who posted withoutlisting specs are also using laptops).Perhaps a keyboard software/driver conflict with DirectX input ?
Posting the resolution of this issue on the Win10 Feedback App may see MS come up with a fix ?
- It is a bit difficult to imagine the Intel HD graphics driver conflicting with this input service, but that
seems to be the only other variable.
I just played FC3 for 40 min. on desktop PC with the "Touch Keyboard and Handwriting Panel Service" started
(I had turned if off when first setting up Win10) and had no problem.
- Anyway - Glad to see those who were having problems with the game have found a solution.
You may try compatibility mods: run as Administrator, compatible with Windows 7, disable DPI scaling etc. However, this did not make any diferrence earlier.
Try going through basic troubleshooting procedures:
1) Check Event Viewer to find out, which module has failed. Check with Microsoft Support.
2) Re-Install DirectX, Microsoft Visual C++ x86 and x64, Microsoft .Net Framework 3, 4 and 4.5 in that order.
3) Re-install or update display and sound drivers.
4) Try Clean boot.
5) Try Safe boot.
6) Refresh Windows and re-install the game. YOU WILL LOSE ALL INSTALLED DESKTOP-BASED SOFTWARE!
7) Reset Windows and re-install the game. YOU WILL LOSE ALL YOUR PERSONAL DATA!
8) Consider reverting to older versions of Windows.
You can procced to next step only if current method does not work for you.
I have been in contact with sega support for 5 days because "Alien Isolation" kept crashing. he gave me standard support options wich didn't work until he found out that "XAudio2_7.dll" was the problem. with that knowledge, I got to this page.
I informed an linked the support to this page and hopefully, he will take this information to the next person who's game keeps crashing after 10-15 minutes.
You go to Task Manager - Services - Open Services. Then, you find Touch Keyboard and Handwriting Panel Service - Properties, change startup type to Disabled and Stop.
EDIT: Oh yeah, the service would not restart by itself, so in order to use touch (on-screen) keyboard, you will need to re-enable it.
